Fiji wins first three

THE Vodafone Fiji sevens team won three of its pool matches during the Federation of Oceania Rugby Unions (FORU) 7s tournament in Noosa yesterday.
In the opening pool game, the Nasoni Roko-captained side ran riot over Tahiti 64-0 before struggling to find its form against the Solomon Islands 36-0. Fiji then beat Cook Islands 34-0 in its third game.
National sevens coach Ben Ryan gambled his starting line-up, resting skipper Roko and the experiencd players of Manueli Laqai and Isikeli Vuruna. Viliame Mata paired Eremasi Radrodro in the props and Apimeleki Mocekula started at hooker during the second game.
Fleet-footed Jerry Tuwai formed the halves combination with Vatemo Ravouvou while Yamacia speedster Jone Qoro featured at rover and Niko Verekauta wings out wide in Ryan’s starting line-up against the Solomon Islanders.
Fiji led 17-0 at halftime from tries to hooker Apimeleki Mocekula and speedster Niko Verekauta, grabbed a brace of tries. In the second spell, Roko, Laqai and Vuruna came off the bench and continued the momentum where Fiji scored another three tries.
The current side is Ryan’s second string team.
Meanwhile, the Fijiana side thumped Papua New Guinea in its opening game before losing to hosts nation Australia 5-24 in its second game.
