Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says Fiji is working towards getting a slice of the Green Climate Fund’s $US1.69 billion ($F3.73 billion) to aid in developing large scale projects in the country.

While delivering his ministerial statement on the 8th Our Ocean conference in Panama in Parliament yesterday, he said the Finance Ministry was working towards accreditation to be able to access the GCF funds.

The PM said delegations from Fiji met the head of the delegation for the GCF at the conference.

“In this meeting, discussion focused on the GCF United States $1.695 billion funding committed as part of several projects including those at the national, regional, and global level where Fiji is a beneficiary,” Mr Rabuka said.

“As well as ways to simplify the processes required to utilise those funds, we also spoke on ways to assist Pacific Small Island Development States (PSIDS) to develop robust project proposals.”

Mr Rabuka said processes were already in motion to allow Fiji to access a part of the funds. “As mentioned, our government will work towards, not only accessing finance but also to ensure that the financing arrangement we put in place are sustainable.

“In this regard, our Ministry of Finance, thanks to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister responsible (Professor Biman Prasad), is working towards achieving accreditation with GCF, the Green Climate Fund and the Adaptation Fund to be able to directly access project financing and develop large scale projects.”

The Our Ocean’s conference was held in Panama earlier this month.
