THE Vodafone Fiji Women’s football side is ranked 81st in the world in the latest FIFA rankings.

Fiji has climbed 60 places from its previous ranking of 141.

This is the best ranking Fiji has achieved since the 72nd position ranking in 2016.

Team coach Marika Rodu commended the ranking, but said his team needed to play more international matches.

“We were not ranked earlier this year, but we now are,” Rodu said.

“My focus is to still overcome our neighbours Tahiti, New Caledonia and PNG and we need to be consistent at that.

“We will now turn our focus towards the OFC Championship in November.

“Our aim will be to get out of our group and qualify for the semi-finals.

“We have a young squad and we are trying to get as much exposure as possible.”

Fiji is now ranked second in Oceania behind New Zealand who are ranked 20th.

This will be a boost for the Fijians heading into next month’s OFC Women’s Nations Cup in New Caledonia. Fiji is pooled against Cook Islands, Tonga and New Zealand at the tournament.

The OFC Nations Cup will be held from the 18th November to the 1st of December.

The winner of the tournament qualifies for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup as well as the 2020 Olympic Games.
