Fiji to join the world in observing World Human Rights Day

ON December 10, 2018, countries around the world, including Fiji, will be celebrating World Human Rights Day.

Regional Representative for the United Nation’s Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Dr Chitralekha Massey – at a media briefing held in Suva today for the build-up of the event – said they had partnered with a number of organisations, including Pacific Islands Development Forum, University of the South Pacific, Pacific Council of Churches and the Alliance for future Generations Fiji.

She said this year also marked the 70th anniversary of the UN declaration for human rights.

“Now this is the starting point that I would like to make, the UNDHR is very much the foundational stone of what all human rights and the international human rights framework is based on,” Dr Massey said.

In commemoration for this event, those organisations are planning an event called the sun rising on the next seven decades for human rights to be held on Novemeber 16 at the USP lower campus bure.
