Fiji to compete in Oceania U18

THE Fiji under-18 rugby team will compete in the inaugural Oceania Rugby U18 Sevens Championship which is expected to double as the Youth Olympics Qualifier in Sydney, Australia, from April 21-22 at St Ignatius College.

“The move will be the region’s first age grade 7s competition and has been designed to provide a meaningful 7s pathway for Oceania, mirroring that of the region’s 15-a-side program,” Oceania Rugby said in a statement yesterday.

“Adding even more value to this year’s competition, the championship will double as the regional qualification tournament for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in October.”

Oceania Rugby president Richard Sapias said the tournament would become an essential element in preparing the region’s rugby talents.

“Tournaments such as the Oceania Rugby U18 Sevens Championship are a vital part of the international player pathway for unions in our region. International age grade tournaments assist in bridging the transition from school and provincial competitions to national representation,” Sapias said.
