The Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer, John O’Connor has confi rmed that the Fiji men’s and women’s sevens teams competing in their respective competitions at the delayed Tokyo Olympics would be dedicating their matches to the frontline workers of the country.

John O’Connor said it was prudent for the 7s players to honour all the frontline heroes, who are sacrificing their personal wellbeing and lives to ensure Fijians are safe from a killer virus.

“It had been a challenge for the players,” he said.

“There were restrictions in place because of the second wave of COVID-19 to ensure all the players were safe.

“They have been away from their loved ones for nearly three months but with the advent of technology it enabled them to be connected with their families, however it’s nothing new since all the frontline workers in the country have been away from their families since the second wave of the novel coronavirus started in April in Fiji.”

O’Connor said it was a calling for the nation.

“Military offi cers depart the country for peacekeeping missions abroad for a year, leaving behind
their loved ones.

“When the country calls on you, one has to rise up and move on.

“The players understand about the huge challenge the country is facing at the moment and it’s a sacrifice that needs to be made.”

He said the sacrifices made by the players does not compare with that of the frontline workers.

“The frontline workers, who are most vulnerable to the unknown threats to their physical health still valiantly report to their work stations and are risking their lives to keep everyone safe.

“Some frontline workers had contracted the virus while carrying out their duties to protect the nation.”

O’Connor paid tribute to the frontline workers in the country.

“Most of our players are members of the disciplined forces and their minds and thoughts have always been with their families and colleagues.

“They have asked me to convey their appreciation to all the frontline workers for their sacrifices.

“We would like to thank all the frontline workers and dedicate the tournament to them and all Fijians.”

The six-day sevens event at the Summer Olympics started yesterday for the men and culminates with the gold medal match on 28 July while the women’s sevens competition follows on 29-31 July with the gold medal match on ‘Super Saturday’ at the iconic Tokyo Stadium in Japan.
