THE sport of surfing is continuing to be used as a form of exercise around the world with only a few countries restricting access to the beach.

The Fiji Surfing Association (FSA) is the recognised governing body of the sport of surfing in Fiji and is a member of the International Surfing Association (ISA).

In pushing for the sport of surfing to develop here in Fiji and to provide safe lessons for novices and advanced surfers, the FSA conducts regular professional accreditation courses and these are your first step in becoming a qualified accredited surf coach.

Surf coaching is all about people, the ones you work for/with and the people you are teaching. You get to meet and interact with people from all walks of life, different nationalities and ages and get to share your office, the ocean.

These people you’re teaching are trusting you to provide a safe, fun experience and learn how to ride a surfboard.

There are a few things you need to know about getting your coaching accreditation.

To be qualified you need to hold both an acceptable surf rescue certificate, a CPR qualification, as well as the actual instructor certificate in order to be able to coach.

These safety requirements need to be updated every 12 months to ensure when you require these skills you can act quickly and correctly.

The FSA takes the need for updating seriously and every 12 months we review, adjust and update our courses to ensure they are teaching you the latest technique methods as well as the safety of participants.

Both the Level 1 and Level 2 accreditation courses have been reviewed and updated ready for when we all come out of isolation.

We want the standard of surf coaching in Fiji to be at the highest level possible. To recognise surf coaches who are assisting in the development of surfing over a long period with documented examples in Fiji we are establishing a Level 3.

The Level 3 can only be achieved by application to the national head coach. The days of untrained good meaning mates, siblings or partners are finished and surf coaching is a profession conducted by professionals.

If you are looking for an accredited surf coach in your area please contact us for a current list of professional surf coaches to choose the one for you.

The FSA usually has three Level 1 accreditation courses and one Level 2 accreditation course conducted each year at different locations to make access as easy as possible.
