Fiji’s Ministry of Health reported 161 new cases of COVID-19 for the 24-hour period that ended at 8am today.
Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong also announced one new border quarantine case – a 23-year-old man from Tokyo who arrived into the country on September 12 at the Nadi Airport.
He said the man’s entry swab on September 16 was noted negative, and was reported to have become symptomatic on day nine of his mandatory 14-day quarantine in a managed facility.
He added the man’s swab on day 11 (Sept 23) returned positive for COVID-19.
“As per protocol, he has been retrieved and transferred to a managed Isolation Facility in Nadi. He is currently noted to be in a stable condition and the disinfection process of his room and linen have been completed by the onsite health quarantine officer,” Dr Fong said.
“All frontline workers and accompanying passengers who were in contact with this individual have been included in the routine weekly swabbing schedules and the front-liner surveillance schedules.”
Dr Fong also reported six COVID deaths for the period July 9 to September 24 – four were reported from the Central Division, and two from the Western Division.
There have been 84 new recoveries to report since the last update, which means that there are now 13,067 active cases; 50,631 cases recorded during the outbreak that started in April 2021.
Fiji has recorded 50,701 cases since the first case was reported in March 2020, with 36,608 recoveries.
