Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka joins 21 leaders of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)-member countries in San Francisco today to discuss trade and investment, enhanced economic growth, sustainability and climate, and just transition on energy.

Mr Rabuka was invited by United States president Joe Biden to attend the 30th session of the APEC Summit – a platform for member leaders to engage in meaningful discussions to map out affirmative action, and innovative and sustainable solutions for the Pacific region.

The Government stated the PM’s attendance at the Summit exemplified Fiji’s commitment to strengthen international relations further, explore areas of common interest, in particular on trade and investment, and regional cooperation.

Mr Rabuka is expected to also highlight the high disaster risk profile in the Pacific, the lack of access to transformational technologies, and ongoing loss and damage from climate change and natural disasters.

Discussions at the APEC summit will focus on regional economic issues, including digitisation, women’s economic empowerment, trade facilitation, energy security, food security and health, the Government stated.

The summit – chaired by the US – will be attended by the president of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and captains of industry, business and organisations accredited to the APEC.

Mr Rabuka will meet with Mr Jinping for the first time on the margins of the APEC Summit to discuss “Fiji and China’s longstanding relations”.
