The business process outsourcing (BPO) sector is playing its part in efforts to diversify Fiji’s economy because of the greatest assets already available in the country.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said those assets included Fiji’s skilled, young, literate, and English-speaking and tech savvy workforce.
He said the country also has access to solid digital infrastructure available at affordable rates.
Mr Bainimarama made these comments last night when he officially launched the Bula Outsourcing head office in Suva last night.
“We are in the right time zone – the only country where the 180-degree meridian makes land fall. We Fijians, I am told, have neutral accents easily understood by an Aussie, Kiwi, Brit or American,” the PM said.
He said Bula Outsourcing began its operations during the COVID-19 pandemic, “which surely demonstrates its confidence in Fiji—in our world-class ICT infrastructure, our policies, our competitive business costs and our people and of course our attractive tax incentives”.
Mr Bainimarama said the potential the BPO sector has for Fiji could not be understated, particular the provision of employment, especially for young people.
He said at present, the BPO sector employs more than 7000 Fijians, and the potential to generate about 100,000 jobs in the next 10 years.
