Health Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete says Fiji only recognises 24 accredited test sites for the COVID-19 virus. He said returning Fijians must be tested in the approved sites.

“We do have a say in where our citizens get their test results from,” he said.

“There are more than 1000 rTPCR (real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) tests done but we only recognise 24.”

Dr Waqainabete said this contributed to Fiji’s 100 per cent compliance rate by the World Health Organization.

“The Ministry of Health published a few weeks ago that we have 100 per cent compliance to WHO criteria for COVID- 19 and we even had 100 per cent compliance rate before COVID-19 came into the country.

“So from the more than 1000 rTPCR testings around the world, we only recognise 24 which are like ours.

“Only those 24 testing sites are recognised by us and we encourage every Fiji citizen returning to Fiji to get their tests from these places.”

The minister said a second Center for Disease Control laboratory would be established in Nadi where most tests for returning Fijians would be carried out.

The country has been COVID- 19 community transmission free for more than 180 days.
