Fiji loses, Krishna to miss second match

STAR striker Roy Krishna will not play for the Vodafone Fiji football team against Kaya Football team in Manila, Philippines, tonight.

Krishna came off the bench against Philippines in Fiji’s 2-3 loss on Thursday night in the international friendly match.

Fiji Football Association chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf said Krishna had club commitments in New Zealand where his Wellington Phoenix team will play Brisbane Roar in the A-League tomorrow.

“Roy, after he went on to the field, changed the game around and the players got more confident,” Yusuf said.

“The whole idea was that Roy, a contracted player overseas, will at times play for Fiji with local players.

“It is a good ploy by our coach Christophe Gamel to start with the local players before sending Roy in the 35th minute.

“Roy will fly back since he has a club commitment. He will play for his Wellington Phoenix team this weekend.”

The hosts scored three goals through captain Phil Younghusband in the 29th minute, Pika Minigeshi in the 52nd and Kevin Ingreso in the 61st.

Fiji, which has a lower FIFA ranking status, retaliated through goals from Ame Votoniu, who guided the ball into the net in the 74th minute after Philippines goalkeeper was beaten, and Krishna from a spot kick or penalty kick (direct) after he was fouled in the 79th minute.

“Coach Gamel has taken a lot of new players to see how they play at international level with two weeks of preparation. I believe the players did well.

“The players played well coming from behind to score two goals, but Philippines are ranked 122 and we are ranked 168 in the world.

“If we look at the statistics, we did well because we had possession and played constructive football and that is where we want to go. There will be continuous team camps when they return.”

The match between Fiji and Kaya FC will start at 11.30pm (Fiji time).
