The Fiji Labour Party has introduced its first five candidates – Shaireen Nisha, Taina Rokotabua, Sai Vulawalu, Atunaisa Tuiwawa Raituku and Tiger Chandra Narayan.

The candidates were announced at a party campaign meeting at Togomasi in Nadi last Thursday.

At the gathering, party leader Mahendra Chaudhry said Fiji’s economy had been greatly impacted by the three coups over the years.

He said when coups happened, they had a very negative impact on a nation’s economy.

Mr Chaudhry said after a coup, people would not want to invest in a particular country and many leave because the future would not be so secure for them.

“We have been through three coups and you can imagine the impact of it on ordinary citizens.

“They lose their jobs, their lives are disrupted and they would have to pay more for goods and services because the currency gets devalued.

“Our currency is so weak because we have gone under three devaluations.”

Mr Chaudhry said Fiji, as an importing nation because of the fact 30 per cent of our requirements were imported, paid more because our dollar value was weak.

“Had these coups not taken place, our economy would have been at another level,” he said.

Mr Chaudhry said the upcoming election was crucial for the future of the economy.

“It is the blood and sweat of the working class people that creates wealth in this country, so do not let anyone dictate to you,” he added.
