Fiji is joining a regional immunisation action plan to eliminate measles and rubella in the Pacific.

Government’s chief medical advisor Dr Jemesa Tudravu said regional countries were discussing the way forward as part of the 2023-2025 Strategies and Plan of Action on Verification of Measles and Rubella Elimination in the Pacific set by Sub-Regional Verification Committee.

“The measles and rubella outbreak preparedness and other response plan will be discussed and highlighted as part of the measures in preventing large scale outbreak and re-establishment of endemic transmission and other (vaccination preventable disease) VPD control and elimination activities,” said Dr Tudravu.

Discussions on the action plan were held in Nadi this week where regional medical experts gathered to talk about the region’s VPD and immunisation programs.

During the workshop, Fiji was revealed to have administered 450 first doses of measles containing vaccines (MCV) from 2018 to 2022 while 407 second doses were given out for the same period.
