Tourism Fiji has joined the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) in a crucial move to ensuring and promoting sustainable tourism practices throughout Fiji.

This latest progress was announced by its chief executive Brent Hill at the Global Recycling Day celebrations in Denarau over the weekend.

Mr Hill says GSTC is an international organisation that establishes and promotes sustainable tourism standards and its membership comprises of leading tourism, destinations and companies from around the world that Fiji has joined.

“And by joining, we are exhibiting our dedication towards the sustainable development of tourism,” he said.

“We will have access to the very best valuable resources and expertise that can help in the implementation of sustainable tourism practices.

“And we’re very dedicated to doing that across our entire team.”

Mr Hill said they were privileged to partner with the Pacific Recycling Foundation and this latest initiative would make a positive impact on the environment and the communities they work closely with.

He also shared that tourism stakeholders would want to maintain Fiji’s pristine environment as this was the main reasons thousands of visitors continue to come to Fiji for holidays.

“It is a very beautiful place and we want to keep it that way.

“Our focus is on sustainable tourism and development that promotes Fiji’s natural environment.

“The beautiful culture of Fiji, the authenticity, and at the same time addresses pertinent issues such as climate change.”

Mr Hill explained that from the tourism perspective, they must ensure as proprietors that our beautiful islands and unique cultures are preserved for generations to come.

“We are stewards of this land.

“And we offer what the demand trends are shaping into and to keep up with the challenging markets.

“The tourism industry is the largest industry and a vital source of income.

“However, of course with the increase in tourism, income comes increase in waste and therefore our responsibility is to deal with that.”
