THE Fiji Rugby Union created history yesterday being appointed a member of the World Rugby Council and attended its first meeting in Dublin, Ireland yesterday.

With a new governance model paving the way for wider representation on World Rugby’s council, Fiji alongside Pacific Island neighbours Samoa were warmly welcomed by the council, which now comprises 51 members.

“This is an historic day for World Rugby and the Pacific Islands,” said World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont on the occasion recognising the enormous contribution that the Pacific Islands make to the global game.

“We are delighted to welcome Fiji and Samoa to the council, two unions who have contributed so much to the game.”

Beaumont also encouraged other unions to take inspiration from Fiji and Samoa and review their governance and strive to achieve the required criteria.

“The Pacific Islands are unique, immersed in rugby heritage, and I know that the unions will bring excellent insights and make strong contributions on council,” he said.

FRU chairman and council member for Fiji, Francis Kean hailed the historic event as one of Fiji Rugby’s most significant moments.

“This is a significant moment for Fiji rugby and all those who have worked towards this objective,” Kean said.

“We look forward to working with World Rugby and the council to further our contribution to the global game in the boardroom.”
