THE Vodafone Fiji men’s football side is set to move up the FIFA world rankings after making a clean sweep in the Three Nations FIFA international friendlies against New Caledonia and Mauritius.

The Christophe Gamel-coached ‘Bula Boys’ defeated New Caledonia 3-0 (ranked 154) and Mauritius 1-0 (ranked 156).

Both New Caledonia and Mauritius were ranked above Fiji (169) in the FIFA world ranking which was released on February 9.

Fiji Football Association CEO Mohammed Yusuf said the details of the three matches had already been forwarded to FIFA.

He said Fiji’s rankings would improve when the next one was released on April 4.

With the next FIFA international window set to run from June 3-11, Gamel is hoping to take the national side abroad after the success in the country.

He is eyeing a trip to Europe with an invitation to play Estonia and a few professional clubs.

Gamel said the national camp would cease for the moment with the players being released for district and club duties.

“The players will be released for the Vodafone Premier League and I have no choice,” he said.

“I would like to keep these players together honestly because the more time I have with them the better it is.

“But I have to let them go and play for their districts and give their best for the districts.

“So in the process, I will only have them for about one week or four days before the June international window.”
