Update: 5:53PM FIJI has been declared a Sendai target champion in disaster risk reduction by the United Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) in Geneva.
Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management assistant Minister Joeli Cawaki highlighted this to participants at the Pacific Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Suva.
“Because of a successful effort towards Tropical Cyclone Winston response, Fiji is proud and honoured to have been recognised as one of the Sendai Champions for reducing disaster risk mortality during its response period,” Mr Cawaki said.
He added that proper planning put in place and commitment by a united multi-stakeholder workforce was a testimony during Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston.
The Sendai Champion receives its name from the Sendai Framework, which was adopted by UN member states last year to reduce disaster losses.
Other Sendai Champions include Peru, India, Nigeria, and Europe.
