Fiji can host big events

FIJI can host bigger events.

These were the words of the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) and Athletics Fiji president Joseph Rodan after successfully hosting the 2017 Oceania Athletics Championships at the ANZ Stadium in Suva over the weekend.

“For Athletics Fiji we are happy to have hosted the championships and it is another way we are trying to entice our athletes to stay in the sport after the Coca-Cola Games. The question for us was what is there after the Fiji Finals so this is the answer since we brought the Oceania Athletics Championships to Fiji to expose our athletes and show them that there is a future in the track and field events,” he said.

“We have got a number of events this year and we will select two athletes who will go to the World Athletics Championship.”

Rodan said through the competition they had brought in about $20 million revenue indirectly into the country.

“Athletics Fiji had invested a lot of money but we are sure the returns will come.

“We are satisfied with the performance of the athletes since we want to get them back in the frame in track and field events,” he said.

“We have proven that we can host track and field events in Fiji.”
