INTERNATIONAL chief judge Neil Abrahams says Fiji’s local chefs could become a strong point of sale for the country’s tourism industry.

“With the right type of support and programs, Fiji can become a food destination as well,” he said.

“I’ve been in and out of the country for many years and it has been great to see the evolution of Fiji’s culinary journey.

“It’s moving towards a very positive future if there is continued support and recognition for local chef’s who continue to innovate and put together dishes that capture the chef’s vision and skill.

“What is even more encouraging is seeing chef’s use local produce that are accessible to everyone.”

He said local farmers also get the recognition they deserved through the use of local produce.

“There’s a whole other industry that will be also recognised and rewarded when we focus more on establishing Fiji as a food destination.

“Local farmers are empowered and they are given a market that again benefits them and their communities.”

He added that competitions such as the National Salon Culinaire provided the opportunity for local chefs to compete and displayed their natural skillset.

“We need more of these types of competitions to bring out the best in our chefs and to see where Fiji’s food industry is at.”

The annual event continues today.
