Fiji Blue makes last four

FIJI BLUE will feature in the semi-finals of the Oceania Zonal Competition which is being played at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.

The Viliame Katia-coached side defeated Solomon Islands 3-0 in the first match yesterday.

The hosts started well to win all three sets 25-13, 25-5 and 25-15.

“It was a good win for the team. After losing to New Zealand in the five set match, we wanted to be in the semi-finals and the players picked up from there.

“The players cut off all the errors from the New Zealand game.

“We have picked up and we hope to reach the final of the zonal competition. Fiji Blue are already in the semi-final with Fiji White from the other pool. New Zealand topped our pool while we were the runners-up.”

Katia said playing more international matches would improve Fiji’s performance and players would get the much needed experience.

“We nearly matched the other top teams looking at the game against New Zealand,” he added.

“New Zealand plays more high level competition and from my view we went to the five sets and we are trying to be more competitive internationally.

“This is just the beginning of many things to come and the men’s team have never qualified for the second phase so it is a challenge for us to qualify for the second phase.”

The competition ends tomorrow.
