THE King of Sevens Waisale Serevi labelled the Fiji Bitter Marist Sevens tournament as a platform to build future rugby stars.

The 7s maestro was at the team managers and coaches briefing at the Lambert Hall in Flagstaff on Wednesday when he made a statement calling for the organisers to maintain consistency of the 43- year-old tournament and the outcome it has achieved in the past years.

Serevi will guide his Russian 7s team this weekend as they compete in a tournament where 63 teams and 756 Fijian players will compete in two days.

“I told the boys there is no other better place to learn sevens from or to expose ourselves in than playing in a sevens tournament in Fiji,” said Serevi.

“To play against the world champion, series winner, Olympics gold medallist and the best team in the world of 7s rugby is a good place to learn and the Marist 7s tournament provides all the competition needed to build up our performance as we work ourselves into the tier one category.”

Tournament director Koli Korovulavula said having the Russian team in the competition was a privilege for the tournament organisers and Fiji rugby.

“It is an honour to have the Russian team competing at the Marist 7s tournament and we hope to give them the best experience of Fijian rugby as they compete against 63 Fijian teams,” Korovulavula said.
