THE Natabugana rugby 7s team from Dagai Village on Kadavu dubbed the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament as Fiji’s Hong Kong 7s because of the excitement and the history of the event.

Participating in the Marist tournament for the first time, the players and officials made it an effort for three months to feature in this significant event through sweat and sacrifices.

Team manager Rusiate Cakau said the boys and the villagers supported the idea of participating in the Marist 7s tournament.

“This is for the first time that a team from the village of Dagai will be playing in the Marist 7s tournament and we are excited because we’ve only played in tournaments around Kadavu and to be part of something big as this is a major boost for the team,” said Cakau.

“Marist is probably the longest and the biggest local 7s tournament and it is a good opportunity for the boys from Dagai to expose their talents because we have some very gifted players in our side and we can’t wait to run into the ANZ Stadium.”

The team fundraised through selling yaqona and fish to support them financially during their stay for the tournament.

The Marist 7s tournament kicks off on Friday 22-23 at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.
