Fiji and Russia reviews bilateral ties

Update: 9:59PM FIJI’S Prime Minister Rear Admiral (Ret) Voreqe Bainimarama and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reviewed the bilateral relations between the two countries during a meeting at the United Nations today.
A statement from Fiji’s Ministry of Information stated both sides expressed satisfaction with the steady progress being made in the relationship between the two nations.
It said the upcoming attendance of eight Fijian diplomats and military officers at the Russian Service Institute in Moscow formed a key part of the discussions.
The statement said the Prime Minister also took the opportunity to welcome the Russian Defence Ministers expected visit to Fiji in early 2015.
It said he also thanked Mr Lavrov for the educational opportunities that Russia has offered Fiji and other Pacific islands at the federal university in Vladivostok.
He said that Fiji intended to respond positively to this offer.
Mr Lavrov also congratulated Rear Admiral (Ret) Bainimarama for the successful completion of the general election and for his victory.
The Prime Minister thanked Russia for its participation in the Multinational Observer Group that monitored the election.
