Fiji Airways sends 758 workers home

Listen to this article:

Fiji Airways today terminated 758 employees.

In a statement released this afternoon, the airline says those terminated include 79 expatriate pilots and eight expatriate executives.

Fiji Airways managing director and CEO Andre Viljoen announced the workforce adjustments “as a consequence of the current and foreseeable operating environment”.

He says the adjustments “are necessary and unavoidable as the COVID-19 crisis endures, causing the further suspension of scheduled international services and ensuring that the airline will receive virtually zero revenue in the coming months.”

Mr Viljoen says Fiji Airways was also negotiating with its lenders and aircraft lessors for loan and lease payment deferrals.

It was also arranging debt finance from a number of financial institutions.
