Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum’s fear of losing in the coming general elections is obvious in how he has introduced a law that requires political parties to provide receipts for every “roti parcel and lamb curry” sold at party events.

The People’s Alliance leader Sitiveni Rabuka made the claim during a rally in Nasinu last Saturday that was attended by supporters from across the country and the party’s provisional candidates.

He urged his supporters to help the party remove the FijiFirst Government in the coming general election.

Mr Rabuka said the FijiFirst Government was giving away goodies, claiming it was their official duty to do this, while members of other political parties were referred to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) if they were found doing something similar.

“But if other politicians do it, they are being harassed by the Supervisor of Elections for allegedly breaching electoral laws in trying to influence voters,” Mr Rabuka said.

He said some members of his party, such as Lynda Tabuya and Sajal Narayan, had been referred to FICAC.

“This is a great example of the machinery of fear at work.

“It is ridiculous that he warned if roti parcels and lamb curry are sold at party events, that a receipt must be issued for every purchase, if not, FICAC (charges) will follow if the roti and lamb curry rules are not followed.”
