Australian High Commissioner to Fiji John Feakes whose family is under quarantine at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi has praised the efforts of border quarantine officials as they continue to monitor travellers entering the country.

“Fiji has done an outstanding job in managing coronavirus,” he said.

“I am unaware of any other country in the world in which there is zero community transmission and Fiji’s management of quarantine has been second to none.

“My family is in quarantine at the moment and they have said to me that the RFMF (Republic of Fiji Military Forces) and the medical people at the Tanoa (International) have been very firm and very friendly.

“They’ve struck the right balance and as a consequence there has been no community transmission. There have been cases in quarantine and immediately they are isolated and it hasn’t gotten into the community.” He said Australia was still struggling to manage the outbreak.

“We in Australia have not managed to do that.

“The Melbourne outbreak is caused by in part because of hiccups in quarantine. Fiji has done a great job.”

Mr Feakes was in Nadi recently for a networking cocktail for members of the Fiji-Australia Business Council,” Mr Feakes said.

He said the networking event was an important aspect of discussing the struggles faced during the coronavirus era.

“It’s very important for me as the Australian High Commissioner to hear from Australian businesses based in Fiji and Fijian businesses about the challenges they are facing in this coronavirus era and I can then reflect that to my government in Australia.”
