THE Fiji Bus Operators Association (FBOA) has called on Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) chief executive officer Joel Abraham to come out clean and reveal the formula used to increase bus fares by 7 per cent.

In a statement FBOA president Nishar Shah said on average, the fare increase for all stages in Viti Levu and Vanua Levu granted by the FCCC was between 1.34 and 1.39 per cent.

Mr Shah said this compared to figures from the Reserve Bank of Fiji for the past 10 years showing inflation has increased by up to more than 28 per cent during that time.

“Mr Abraham also suggested bus companies should cut costs if they are struggling. There are almost no other costs to cut apart from suspending services that are uneconomical,” he said.

“Buses operate on a fixed timetable regulated by the Land Transport Authority. Whether there is only one passenger in the bus or 10, bus operators are obliged to run that trip.”
