Fatal car accident, driver in remand

THE 29-year-old driver of a private vehicle involved in a fatal car accident in Nanuku Settlement, Ra, has been remanded in custody by the Tavua Magistrates Court.
Police prosecutor Inspector Chin Samy said Savenaia Buladradra was charged with two counts of occasioning death by dangerous driving and one count of driving without a valid driver’s licence.
He said the accused was not represented in his first appearance before Magistrate Samuela Qica in a special court sitting yesterday.
The case has been adjourned to November 16.
The 29-year-old is alleged to have been speeding while trying to overtake a truck along the Kings highway near Nanuku on October 29.
He allegedly lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road landing in a ditch before tumbling over twice.
The accident resulted in the death of Merewai Vunisa Balekolo and her six-year-old daughter.
Meanwhile, two other special court sittings were also called yesterday in Lautoka and Nadi.
According to divisional police prosecutor ASP Anil Prasad a suspect appeared in Lautoka for theft while the second accused appeared for allegedly defiling a temple in Nadi.
