Fasting for the month of Ramadan will commence today.

In a statement, Fiji Muslim League general secretary Saiyad Hussain has advised its members of the sighting of the new moon for Ramadhan-ul-Mubarak.

“If the new moon is sighted on Saturday April 2 then Ramadhan-ul-Mubarak will start on Sunday April 3 otherwise on Monday April 4, 2022,” he said.

“The new moon has not been sighted today (Sunday April 3) therefore fasting will commence on Monday.”

Meanwhile, Fiji Ramadan timings for 2022 are specific for Fiji and verified according to the lunar calendar.

Ramadan is the holy month for Muslims worldwide and occurs on the ninth month of the lunar-based Islamic calendar.

Muslims believe that during Ramadan they will exercise self-control, sacrifice and empathy for the less fortunate, this is practised through fasting.
