FASANOC, Team Fiji to map plans

FIJI Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) and Team Fiji will map out a plan to better prepare Fijian athletes who will compete in the Olympic Games in Japan.

With the Tokyo Games moved to next year after it was cancelled yesterday by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and host country Japan, FASANOC chief executive offi cer Lorraine Mar said Fiji had taken the next step in continuing preparation amidst the COVID-19 pandemic which postponed the games.

“We are working closely in regards to the recent changes, especially with out athletes involved,” Mar said.

“I am working with Team Fiji chef-demission Patrick Bower as we map a way forward for Team Fiji,” Members of Team Fiji are continuing with personal training programs as they adhere to the rules and regulations of social distancing in light of the COVID-19 epidemic instructed by Government for Fijians.

Yesterday World Health Organization, IOC president Thomas Bach and Japan prime minister Shinzo Abe jointly announced that the Games in Tokyo have been rescheduled to next year, but not later than summer 2021.

Bach and Abe expressed their shared concern about the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, and what it is doing to people’s lives and the significant impact it is having on global athletes’ preparations for the Games.

The leaders agreed that the Olympic Games in Tokyo could stand as a beacon of hope to the world during these troubled times and the Olympic flame will stay in Japan.

It was also agreed that the Games will keep the name Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.
