MEMBERS of Team Fiji to the Commonwealth Games in Scotland were hosted to dinner by the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) on Saturday.
FASANOC president Reg Sanday said it was their way of thanking the athletes for their performance for the national at the event in Glasgow.
He also applauded weightlifter Apolonia Vaivai who won Fiji’s only medal – a bronze, at the meet.
Sanday said she was lucky to get a scholarship to train at the Oceania Weightlifting Centre (OWC) in New Caledonia which played a huge role in her winning the medal.
“Before, she left for the OWC, Fiji was still suspended from the Commonwealth but we were lucky that the suspension was lifted and Vaivai was able to compete at the event,” he said.
“She has a big future ahead of her and we would love to see her compete at the Pacific Games next year and the Rio Olympics in 2016.”
Sanday also said the other athletes did the country proud by giving the best in their respective sports.
“Too often the focus is on the medals but for us the focus was on the performance.
“We have been monitoring the performance of the athletes and we will sit with their National Federations to discuss on how we can help the athletes improve their performance.”
