Farmer jailed for house fire

A Cakaudrove farmer who set a farm house on fire has been sentenced to 18 months out of which 12 months are suspended for two years and the remaining six months to be served in prison.

Josefa Lewaicei yesterday appeared in the High Court in Labasa before Justice Salesi Temo.

He earlier pleaded guilty to setting the house on fire at Wailevu, in the Tunuloa district in January last year.

The court heard he had gone to the farm to look for his missing horse which he found lying near the farm house, injured.

The house belonged to a 29-year-old farmer who had farming gear and equipment inside the house at the time of the fire.

Lewaicei then got the gasoline out of the house, spilled it around the property and set it on fire amounting to a total damage of $1285.
