Tailevu rugby fans have swarmed Prince Charles Park to support their team challenge Nadi for the Farebrother Sullivan Trophy at 3pm today.

With half an hour to go for the fixture, fans are still pouring into the venue.

The entry point for the pavilion is already closed since the grandstand is full to capacity.

The 50 per cent seating capacity at any sporting event has been thrown out of the window as the embankment is almost full with a long line of fans still waiting to purchase their tickets.

When questioned by Times Sport if there was an exemption given to the 50 per cent capacity rule for the fixture, Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer John O’Connor replied that there was no exemption.

“When we reached the 50 per cent, there were still a lot of Tailevu fans outside and they had travelled a long way to Nadi,” O’Connor said.

“We did not want them to be out there because it was more dangerous for them to try to find places to watch the game from.

“So this decision has come from me.

“For me, it is really unfair if they have come all the way and have paid their bus fare and for us to close the gate and send them home. I did not think it was the right thing to do.

“So I asked the people responsible to continue until the last person and then close off the gate.”

According to Wikipedia, Prince Charles Park has a capacity of 18,000.
