Family celebrates Easter together

EASTER is supposed to be spent with loved ones, reminiscing on why Jesus was crucified on the cross.
This was the message relayed to members of the Matakibau family of Makadru Village on the Island of Matuku in the Lau group, as they gathered in Suva for their family reunion.
The event brought together the descendants of Maikeli Matakibau and Aliti Cuatabua.
Sanaila Seru Matakibau travelled to Fiji from the Unite States of America with his wife. He migrated about 15 years ago and was excited to be part of the event.
The rainy Suva weather did not dampen the hearts of many family members, some meeting for the first time during the gathering at Ono-i-Lau House in Nadera, outside Suva.
“It’s such a wonderful occasion for all of us because we have family members who came from the village as well as those who came in from overseas,” Mr Matakibau said.
“I have 11 siblings, three have passed away and the remaining eight along with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are here today.”
Mr Matakibau said he had last seen his siblings about a decade ago, adding it was heart-warming to see how big the family had grown.
“One of my brothers that is here with us is 82 years old and he is healthy and well. He came from the village, so we’re excited to be meeting again after a very long time,” he said.
“I’m sure that this Easter is different from all others, because we are here as one big family and everyone is just so happy to be meeting and sharing jokes and laughter.”
