TWO Lautoka families are grieving the loss of their sons after an accident at the Natabua and Queen’s Rd junction in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Deepak Kumar, 26, and Karan Shanil, 24, lost their lives when the vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road and hit a tree.

Mr Kumar’s father, Kishore Kumar, said the family was in shock and trying to make sense of what had led to his son’s death.

“All I know is that we had our dinner and we all went to sleep,” the 52-year-old said.

“I think he must have left home after we fell asleep.”

Mr Shanil’s father, Dharman Sami, said he learnt of his son’s death from a message he received just after 3am.

“We rushed to the hospital and when the police came, they asked me to identify Karan’s body,” he said.

“This is very hard for us because Karan was going to be engaged in January.”

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the incident happened around 3am.

“The driver and two other passengers are all admitted at the Lautoka Hospital.

“The two victims from Wairabetia were passengers in the vehicle with three others travelling towards Lautoka when the tragic incident occurred.”

The road death toll currently stands at 61 compared with 59 for the same period last year.
