Fall sets record

MUSTAFA Fall has become the first Fijian to throw the shot put over 16 metres.

The Pacific Games gold medallist set the national record this week while preparing for the Commonwealth Games in Australia.

Fall threw 16.04 metres during the UQAC Championships 2018 in Gold Coast, Australia, earlier this week.

Last week he threw 15.84m which broke the national record of 15.78m he set at the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea in 2015.

His achievement has elated Athletics Fiji in the lead-up to the Gold Coast games.

“He has become the first man in Fiji to throw over 16 metres,” Athletics Fiji chief development officer Joseph Rodan Jr said. “It was a good achievement.

“He has been working on his techniques with his coach Morris Erasito.

“He is an athlete who has a talent to throw about 19 or 20 metres.

“In the leading draw at the Commonwealth Games, there is a thrower from New Zealand who is a much smaller person, but he has got techniques and speed.

“Fall has the speed and good conditioning, but we have not got him into high level competition with the top throwers in the world.”

Team Fiji’s athletics side had been preparing in Gold Coast, Australia for the 2018 Commonwealth Games which will be held next month.

“Mustafa is someone who we can see him going to the 2020 Olympic Games,” Rodan said.

“We expect him to throw over 16 metres and if he goes beyond that, it would be beyond our expectation. Coming from 15.76m to 16.04m is a big achievement in the last four years.”
