Labasa may be the first town in the country to install CCTV facial recognition security cameras.

This will be funded and installed by the Northern Duavata Crime Prevention committee. If you’re a wanted person with the police, the cameras can identify you, even at night, and will instantly notify the Labasa Police Station.

Committee chairman Satish Kumar said they were working with Bondwell on this project which would be financed through funds raised in this year’s carnival, which will be held from July 7 to July 15.

“It’s a very costly project and we are replacing the CCTV cameras we installed a few years ago as cyclones have damaged some,” he said “All this is being done for the sake of creating a safe town for all, especially the business community.”

Mr Kumar said organising such events had not been easy.

“Since we started in 2012, we have had sponsors who promised to donate and help with projects but they never kept their promise so my committee has had to step in and spent more than allocated,” he said.

“But despite all these challenges, we are focused on helping police reduce the crime rate and we have done this over the years by purchasing a vehicle, installed CCTV cameras in town for the public and helped communities including health centres.”
