Only Year 12 and 13 students will sit for external examinations this year, says Minister for Education Rosy Akbar.

Ms Akbar said all the other levels would sit for either internal or standard examinations.

“Some levels may sit for diagnostic literacy and numeracy assessments,” she said.

The minister said a total of 11,837 students, 123 schools and 669 teachers were affected during Tropical Cyclone Harold.

“My ministry will only be able to return students to school, given the extensive damage experienced, through the co-ordinated response of all government departments and with the generous assistance of donors and other humanitarian agencies.

“Even if temporary structures are in place, we must ensure that all wash needs are adhered to so that our children can practise safe hand washing.”

She also added that the decision to reopen schools in a timely manner is one that requires great thought and consideration.

“Keeping the current situation and the uncertain future in mind, the decision to reopen schools on June 15 will be made in consultation with the Ministry of Health.”
