At 78, Kanda Samy Mudaliar, has showed no signs of slowing down after winning the Lautoka Bowling Club (LBC) veteran singles title.

Mudaliar defeated Asaeli Nabogi in the final at the club greens in Veitari on Sunday. The former Fiji Sugar Corporation employee, who is also a life member of the club, has won multiple titles on the local scene.

His first major win was the Banana Cup in 2002 with Som Padayachi and then the Pineapple Cup in 2004. The golden years for Mudaliar in the sport were in 2012 and 2013.

In 2012 at the age of 70, he regained the Banana Cup with Shorab Khan and also lifted the prestigious Masters Singles title.

The following year he took out the Masters Pairs title with LBC mate Victa Shri Ramlu at the Vatukoula Bowling Club. Since then Mudaliar has been winning titles at the LBC regularly and last Sunday’s win did not come as a surprise.

Mudaliar said the passion for the sport had been the driving force behind his success. He said the timely practice sessions each week also allowed him to maintain his fitness level.

“There is no age barrier in bowls because you just have to get on to the greens to enjoy every roll you make,” Mudaliar said.

Krishan Singh won the junior singles title while Shanil Prasad was the runner-up.
