Denmark still have a shot at winning their first European Championships title since 1992 after a 2-1 quarterfinal victory over the Czech Republic.

The Danes led 2-0 at halftime after a fifth-minute header from Thomas Delaney and a well-worked goal to Kasper Dolberg – his third of the tournament – three minutes before the interval in Baku on Saturday (Sunday NZ time).

But the Czechs made two halftime substitutions and struck back in the 49th minute through in-form striker Patrik Schick, who slotted his fifth goal of the tournament.

Denmark’s defence – marshalled by captain Simon Kjaer – held firm for the rest of the second half to book a semifinal berth against the winner of the England-Ukraine quarterfinal in Rome later on Saturday (Sunday NZ time).

The Danes have been playing to honour their stricken teammate Christian Eriksen, who is recovering from a cardiac arrest suffered in the tournament opener against Finland.

Mikkel Damsgaard, who has replaced Eriksen in central midfield, provided much of the first-half spark for Denmark.
