Community leaders in the Western Division have established a network that will help fight violence against women and girls. Community workers, staff members from the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre district offices and police in each district will be part of the network.
All stakeholders met at the FRIEND Fiji in Tuvu, Lautoka as part of the 16 Days of Activism program.
“Despite comprehensive measures being taken around the world, violence against women is escalating,” New Zealand High Commissioner Jonathan Curr told the participants.
“In Fiji, eight women passed away last year as a result of violent acts. 72 per cent of women have suffered acts of violence in their lifetime.”
He said the establishment of a network will provide “the moral support” to community leaders.
“You as leaders, working closely with the Crisis Centre to help organise community participation and help people find the support that they need.
“Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre and those who champion to eliminate violence against women play such a crucial role in changing the mindset and the behaviour.
