THE Department of Environment is working on an end of life policy for imported cars.

While speaking at a Waste Management and Pollution Control Roundtable in Nadi, Department of Environment director Sandeep Singh said:

“We are working on an end of life vehicle policy which will address the issue of derelict vehicles that cannot be used again. “We do an existing permit for imported cars but it is mostly to do with the vessels that the vehicles come in but there is an end of life policy that we are currently working on to take care of vehicles that become derelict.”

She said the department looked forward to working closely with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to address some of their issues.

“As we work towards getting this done, what I would like to say is that we are very pleased to come under the Office of the Prime Minister and we are hoping that as we move further into the year, we will get the resources that we need to address the many issues the department faces. “One of our issues is resources and staffing.

“We don’t have the capacity or enough people to go through permits, applications and notices that we are handed on a daily basis. “So we are very hopeful that our pleas to have more people in our team will be heard so that we can start processing people’s and company’s applications.

“We have had meetings with the Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister’s office who is aware of the department’s needs in terms of our resources.”
