The Fiji Public Service Association (FPSA) says Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) workers who were earmarked to be made redundant yesterday should file an employment dispute.

This, after the association was last week able to reinstate one of its members at FRCS who had been made redundant.

The Employment Relations Tribunal (ERT) heard the case of FRCS auditor Jitendra Krishna where the FPSA had argued on the validity of the proposed redundancy before magistrate Indula Ratnayake.

FPSA general secretary Rajeshwar Singh said they were pleasantly surprised to see Mr Krishna receive a letter to continue employment with FRCS.

“Had other employees who will be terminated on Monday 20/12/21 (yesterday) on grounds of redundancy came forward to challenge the FRCS through the association, they would also be retaining their jobs,” said Mr Singh.

“It is a pity that employees and union members are still inhibited in wanting to question the decision of the employer.

“Jitendra Krishna’s case should be an eye-opener for FRCS employees as he approached his union to register a grievance with the Ministry of Employment and from there the FPSA took the matter to ER Tribunal and the FRCS relented by giving him continued employment.”

Mr Singh said they were waiting to hear from FRCS if more workers would be retained after the positive outcome of Krishna’s case.
