The Spinal Injury Association (SPIA) received a $119,986 wheelchair accessible van from the Embassy of Japan to aid in transporting people with spinal injuries or amputations.

The assistance was made possible through Japan’s Grant assistance for Grassroots human security Projects (GGP) Programme.

Embassy of Japan to Fiji counsellor and deputy chief of mission Kenichiro Tanaka handed over the van to Social Welfare acting director Dilitiana Baleinabuli on behalf of the SPIA on Thursday.

Mr Tanaka said the embassy provided the association with an accessible van to assist them in their core role of providing transportation services for people with spinal injuries, amputations and delivering mobility devices to the interior of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.

Since 1990, the embassy has widely implemented GGP projects in areas such as education, water supply, health, transportation, information technology (IT), agriculture and fisheries.

The embassy has formalised 421 projects, which amount to an approximate value of $70 million.
