THE opening of the Honorary Consul in Surabaya City in Indonesia for the Fiji Embassy is an opportunity for the people of East Java and Surabaya to engage deeper with the Fiji Embassy in Jakarta and with Fijian businesses and government departments in various areas of cooperation.
Lady Mayor of Surabaya, Tri Rismaharini highlighted this during the inaugural ceremony on Friday last week.
Ms Rismaharini highlighted the recent developments and improvements in Surabaya including infrastructure, social, education, environment and services, and commented that the opening of Fiji’s Honorary Consul is a timely event.
In attendance also at the ceremony was the representative from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Santo Darmosumarto, the Founder and Chairman of Tahir Foundation, Dato Sri Prof Dr Tahir, and Investment Fiji’s International Manager, Kamal Chetty.
Meanwhile, Charge d’ Affaires of the Fiji Embassy in Jakarta, Isaac Grace personally thanked Prof Dr Tahir, on behalf of the Prime Minster of Fiji and the people of Fiji, for the inauguration of Fiji’s Honorary Consul in Surabaya City.
He acknowledged that while the event was a celebration of a significant milestone for the Fiji Embassy, there was equally a sense of responsibility, ownership and commitment to ensure that there is accelerated work by the Embassy in Surabaya City. “The whole experience is equivalent to having a second Embassy in Indonesia”, said Mr Grace.
The Fiji Embassy staff look forward to an extensive engagement in Surabaya City in the next immediate six months with the first courtesy call to the office of the Ms Rismaharini, secured for the November 22.
