THE date of the 2018 general election is still not known.

The Fijian Elections Office (FEO) said the announcement of the election date was the prerogative of Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

“The writ of elections is issued by the president on advice from the prime minister,” the FEO said in a statement.

In February, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Suresh Chandra, said the commission had expected the FEO to be ready as early as April 1 to announce the confirmed election date.

Mr Chandra said that as the country prepared for the poll, Fijians should check their voting details.

He added that as the nation approaches the date on which the election date will be announced, the commission has noted that the election plans were on par and that there were no surprises along the way, adding that the electoral commissioner expected the FEO to be ready.
