Eight officers were questioned for their alleged involvement in the death of Mesake Sinu who died in October this year at the Nadi Hospital.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the investigation file regarding the death Mr Sinu has been submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

She said the file was sent to the DPPs Office on Monday for sanctioning.

Meanwhile Acting Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu says disciplinary action will be decided once the DPP makes his decision based on the findings of the investigation.

“We will comment further after the file is returned from the DPPs Office.”

Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) director Ashwin Raj said based on witness statements, it has established that Mesake Sinu Leleiwasa had “allegedly sustained injuries in the course of his apprehension”.

“Witnesses claim excessive force may have been used during his arrest as they heard the victim crying in pain and agony,” Mr Raj said in a statement.

It had initially been alleged Mr Sinu died from injuries sustained after he jumped from a double-storey building in a robbery gone wrong on October 12.
