Energy Fiji Ltd (EFL) workers will take to the ballot box next month to vote on whether they should go on strike against the utility provider.
The Construction Energy and Timber Workers Union of Fiji, on behalf of the employees, has filed an application with the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations to take a secret ballot for industrial action.
The union claimed EFL failed to conclude an agreement on a log of claims for the past four years — from 2020 to 2023.
Both the union and EFL management met several times for negotiations, with the company informing the union that any agreement would need EFL board approval.
“We have now served 21 days’ notice to conduct a secret ballot in EFL for failing to agree,” said union general secretary John Paul.
“The notice was issued to the Ministry of Employment and EFL at their head office in Suva. “Our members at EFL will be advised in advance in case of any industrial action taken after the vote.”
Mr Paul said if strike action was taken, “it may affect EFL’s services to the public.”
