THE $1million budget that has been allocated to the education sector is a bold statement of Fiji’s commitment to building a knowledge-based society that will, in turn, result in a resilient, healthy, modern and progressive nation.

Fijian President Major General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote made this comment in his address while officiating at the Vaka Pasifiki Education Conference held at the University of the South Pacific yesterday.

Mr Konrote told the participants that everyone was responsible for educating and preparing the children for the future.

“As educators, you all have pivotal roles to play in the success of the Pacific people and our nations,” the President said.

He also acknowledged the participants at the conference for their passion for education and being able to attend to discuss education issues in the region.

He said discussions held at the conference were important because participants would also need to look at challenges faced and how to address them collectively.

Vaka Pasifiki is a conference that provides an opportunity for the sharing of ideas, presentation of research and best practice, and discussion of issues relevant to teacher education, educational policy and practice, and teaching and learning in Oceania.
